Graduation capA minimum of 23 units and 4 years of full time attendance is required for graduation. The following courses are REQUIRED of all students:

English 4 years  One unit of English each year, including either English 9 Pre-IB survey OR Pre-IB American authors
Foreign Language 2 years Both years in the SAME language
Mathematics 3 years  Including algebra, geometry, and a course beyond geometry 
Science 3 years  Including biology
Social Studies 3 years  World History in ninth gradeUnited States History in tenth gradeAP American Government, IB Global History, IB Economics, OR IB Geography in eleventh grade
Physical Education 3 semesters Open to all grade levels
Health 1 semester Ninth grade.
Fine Arts 2 semesters Any course in Art, Music, Speech/Theatre Arts (except SP011), OR Textile Arts.
Contemporary Communications 1 semester Eleventh or twelfth grade

  • Students must select a minimum of 6 units for each of their four years at Rufus King.
  • There are no half-day programs at King.  The only exception to this rule is for students selecting three or more IB courses.  These students may elect to take only six units.
  • All programs are selected for the entire school year. Some program corrections will be made in September or at mid-year Should unforeseen programming problems arise, students should contact the school early in August.
  • If a course is marked "consent of instructor (and/or department chairperson) required", the student is responsible to obtain the needed signature.


Units Required for Promotion at the End of the School Year

9th grade student (freshman) = less than 5 units

10th grade student (sophomore) = 5 or more units

11th grade student (junior) = 11 or more units

12th grade student (senior) = 17 or more units
