Kerry L. Thomas, a National Board Certified Teacher, studied at the University of Canterbury at Kent, England, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, from which she received her degree in secondary English education, summa cum laude. She spent four years with the Peace Corps training teachers in Sri Lanka, an experience which culminated in writing Improving Teaching Skills: A Handbook of Practical Methodology (for English Teachers) for teacher trainees. Since returning to the States, in addition to teaching she has served on NCTE’s Conference on English Leadership executive board, on the Family Violence Prevention’s curriculum development council to create the Lessons from Literature program, and on the state Department of Public Instruction’s teams for revising English Language Arts state standards and Common Core State Standards implementation. She is also National Writing Project fellow through the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 2008, she revived the Rufus King school newspaper The King’s Page with student journalists. The paper received commendations and awards from both regional and national press associations. She believes in rigorous, quality education for all students, who deserve our very best. |
