King Student Part of Jazz Ensemble Heading to NYC

Robert Larry (far left) has grown from the days of annoying his brothers with his homemade drum set, comprised of empty paint cans, pots and pans, plastic bins and a pair of steel spatulas. The Rufus King High School student has become a leader in King's band, jazz band and drum line, thanks in part to the extra learning opportunities provided by the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.  Robert is a member of the WCM’s Jazz Institute Batterman Ensemble that was selected as a finalist to compete in the 2012 Charles Mingus High School Jazz Competition in New York City last month. The WCM programs and scholarships are partially supported by the MPS Partnership for the Arts.

King's Page Is Recognized
Students who write for the school's newspaper, The King's Page, have been singled out for praise. They recently received a critique from UW-Whitewater and the Kettle Moraine Press Association. It included the comments "excellent news coverage" and "great localization of stories". Their faculty advisor, Kerry Thomas, said of these students, "Be proud of them; they make us proud of Rufus King."

Alumni Association Bulletin

It’s hard to believe, but on May 25th, Rufus King graduated its 74th class, adding to the wonderful legacy of our alma mater that began when its doors opened in 1934. Among this year’s graduating seniors were 89 International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma candidates, as well as others who took at least one IB course and test. There were 901 IB tests taken this year, equaling potential college credit. Every IB test and research paper made these students better equipped to succeed in the competitive world of higher education and the workforce.
